tomato alley residences, sacramento california, 2022

This lot split of an existing Victorian home in mid-town Sacramento will enable new construction for (2) 3 bedroom/ 2.5 bath, 1-car garage single-family residences of approximately 1580 SF each.  Located at the rear of the existing property these residences are to be constructed along Tomato Alley and will serve to invigorate and activate the alley. Only the garages and main entry to each house connect directly to the alley. Each new residence will have its own private outdoor courtyard and backyard space; the existing main front residence along U Street will maintain its own private yard.  The new wood frame structures are thoughtfully comprised of long-lasting, low-maintenance materials. Site walls facing the alley are simple concrete masonry block. The cladding of the upper floor will be a durable bronze metal panel. This cladding also faces the alley on the garage providing durability and low maintenance.  A wood gate is the primary entry point to the home and leads to a secure and private landscaped courtyard with a sidewalk path to the front door. The exterior of the first floor will be clad in wood siding. This natural wood, combined with lush landscaping will connect the inhabitants to nature through a biophilic feel. The first floor is set back from the second floor mass to provide shading and to create covered areas at the entry door and patio door. The second floor building massing comprised of bedrooms are set back from the alley to provide a sense of separation and privacy.
